Shoot for the Moon

As I was growing up this saying could often be heard around my house, “shoot for the moon.” Now if you know my family you know we are big double deck euchre fans, part of playing euchre is ‘shooting’ this means you think your hand of cards is so good you want to play the round without your partner.
As a kid when I would play euchre I would constantly think my hand was so good I would shoot it without my partner all the time. One time, with my grandpa as my partner, I decided to risk the game thinking I could win all by myself. After trying and losing my grandpa pulled me aside and showed me how much easier it would have been to win if he could have helped me. In the next round I chose to let him decide what suit we would play and though we were down by over 20 points we ended up winning the game. We won because I was able to set my pride aside and accept help.
When we shoot for our goals in life we tend to ‘shoot for the moon’ and think we don’t need any help. The American way is thinking we can do everything by ourselves but realistically we need advice from others so we don’t have to learn from our mistakes.
